SALTFORD DRIVING SCHOOL
Getting a good idea of how to control the car before you try anything on the road is something almost everyone used to do years ago and it’s still the best way to give you a head’s start before attempting to drive “for real” with other traffic around. Our under 17 or prestart courses are available to anyone over the age of 16 1/2years and are very different to those you see advertised because you will be driving and getting familiar with car controls even on your first hour. None of that 6 hour “theory” sessions of sitting watching videos nonsense. You will be sent the information to study before you start and then you will be driving in your first session. All sessions will be one to one so you haven’t got people watching you make mistakes. All will be done off road and these short courses help anyone to learn the basics before starting on road lessons.
MAKING IT EASY TO LEARN
To help you master one skill at a time, you can start off in an automatic if you like so you can get used to steering, gas control and braking one at a time without worrying about clutch control and stalling to contend with as well. This greatly speeds your learning and understanding of how cars work. Then, when you feel comfortable with steering, gas and brake control then you can try a manual if that’s your plan and you can then focus on clutch and gears. With many schools you never get the chance to try an automatic but you will certainly be driving an auto one day with electric cars coming in so you will already have the experience
OTHER SCHOOLS UNDER 17 COURSES
We know what happens with other pre 17 and introductory courses, you can only do them at certain times of the year and have to travel many miles to get there, they are only done at weekends and you spend 6 hours watching videos, your instructor is likely to be a trainee driving instructor (ie not even fully qualified and very inexperienced) so you are given a lot of wrong information and, perhaps embarrassingly, each car is full of other passengers sitting there watching you make mistakes. Not nice! And in an hour practical, with al the swopping around and adjustment of seats and mirrors, you will be lucky to have 10mins of drive time to yourself. That’s no good at all. When you think about how much that 10mins of driving has cost you then it’s very poor value
WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR OFF ROAD COURSES?
For a start, all our off road courses are one to one, just you and your instructor and are very “hands on” so you will be shown what to do and then given the opportunity immediately to try it for yourself, all completely safely under the watchful eye of your experienced instructor on board with dual controls to help you if you need it. It’s the quickest way to learn, watch someone doing it and then get in and try it yourself whilst under top class supervision
WHAT ELSE IS IN THE COURSE?
CAR MECHANICS
You will also have hands on experience of simple car mechanics, what to check weekly on your vehicle and the signs to look for which also form part of your practical test these days as you’ll need to show and tell your examiner how you check these things
TYRES
Taking care of your tyres, the most important part of your car as it’s the only thing keeping you in contact with the road. Even your brakes are not going to be so good if there’s anything wrong with your tyres or tyre pressures. We'll show you how to check your tyres, check tyre pressures and put air in your tyres
OIL, ENGINE COOLANT, BRAKE FLUID
All of these will be discussed and demonstrated to you so you appreciate how important these items are. Again we will go over bad signs and what to look for Most driving school do not go over these vitally important items in detail because there simply isn’t enough time or safe places to do them so here’s an excellent opportunity to understand how important these items are
BAY PARKING
As your car control and steering improves then you can practise reversing following the kerb and parking the car in a bay between the lines, these are manoeuvres you’ll be asked to do on your test so you’ll have a good idea of these test manoeuvres already! Less time taken when you start taking lessons on the road
BETTER PREPARATION FOR USING YOUR OWN CAR
Of course, by learning car control off road then you will be much more informed and safer if you intend doing work in between your on road lessons in your own family car
COURSE
Our courses consist of a 3 hour course (usually carried out in 2 x 90min sessions) and your progress will be marked and sent to you by email so you have a record of what you have done. You will be picked up from your home and returned at the end for each session. It’s also a chance to meet and see how we do things differently to other schools. We are very much an e-learning type school where we send you the subjects to learn and you will have on line videos to watch and study. It will give you a head start if you intend taking lessons with us in the future as you will already see how we do things and why we are so much better than other schools, after all we’ve been teaching for 30 years now so we really know what we’re doing and have often taught whole families to drive
